I’m no expert on gears, but I think the rule of thumb is ‘Driving gear should be harder material than driven gear’ I think having an metal idler may cause you more troubles, possibly excessive wear on the worm… Maybe someone else can shed some light on this, I'm keen to know.


Also out of interest have both idler gears warn at the same rate?
