I've been on this train and the Simla-Kalka and Niligiri mountain railway several times. A fascinating experience at heights of 3,000 to 5,000 feet. Met some of the most interesting railroad engineers who make do with whatever they have in terms of spares. I even had hot tea inside the engine with saturated steam diverted to serve hot water in a very interesting makeshift kettle with whistling jets. The Darjeeling tea was as good as the supermarket brand. The Nilgiris coffee espresso is another super concoction if served inside the cab by the friendly Guard. Best served with a good vegetarian breakfast of idli-sambar-vada at 3,500 feet. But had to share with the Guard's dog who insisted on sharing the compartment with me while fending off the Rhesus monkeys who rode the roof all the way.

Another interesting aspect - most of the kids did their homework on the train back home, so they had more play time while the sun was up. The Guard would occasionally check the homework and help out with the Algebra !! If he couldn't figure something out, they all collectively agreed the school teacher had set a trap again.

I'm heading for the Palace on Wheels soon this summer. Another intriguing journey.

Cheers,
Victor
