I worked for Sperry Rail Service during semester breaks while studying engineering in college. We did the ultrasonic testing mentioned in the article (but also induction testing as well). When we'd find defects in the track, the following section crew would cut them out and replace with new rail. The rail with the defect would then be shipped to our facility where it would be broken with a hydraulic ram. That was always pretty cool to break the rails!! We even had a test track comprised of all different kinds of defects. Obviously, at 7 mph, we were pretty safe running back and forth.
