RE: What is your "true harbinger of spring"

In the last 60 or so years I think I have seen maybe 5 or 6 Robins gathered in one yard just once or twice and thought it unusual... they are quite territorial. But just last week I saw more than 200 Robins all in the few trees and bushes in one small tri-cornered park near here... I think that doubled the sum total of all the Robins I have ever seen.

I pray the rains don't "harbinger of spring" like that!
I think you missed the obvious ones for me ... the last snow melts or the frost comes out of the ground thawing it.

Regards ... Doug

When a clear sky brings warm weather, not cold.

We used to have a woodpecker come drum on the gutters. You could hear it a long way.

Witch Hazel in bloom = 10% spring, 90% winter (mid February)
Snowdrops in bloom = 30% spring, 70% winter (March) (this is where we are right now)
Daffodils in bloom = 50/50. (April)
The trees leaf out, True Spring has arrived. (May)

DQ closes???

Doug, by the time the snow melts up there, isn't it July already? I know Scot has to deal with it until May. ;)

For me, it's the lilacs in bloom. By the time that happens, the grass is greening up nicely, and I can tell which plants survived the winter and which ones will have to be replaced. It used to be the daily dose of Benedryl, but since moving to Colorado, my seasonal allergies have virtually vanished. Now I can actually enjoy the spring.

I don't understand the question????

Daffodils

...and over here in UK, that means MILLIONS of them.

In Hebrew they are called 'Hope' and are a kind of promise that all is going pretty well, no matter what else happens.

Tornado, thats the name of a NEW steam engine right??
When the snow is finally gone from the top of Mt. Spokane. Usually happens during the last week of May. Then I can start planting without fear of nighttime freeze.
Crocuses have made their appearance and are in full bloom, daffodils and tulips are pushing their way up. Can't use Robins anymore since I found out that they don't actually migrate but only move as far south as where nature will present them with a meal. However, Great Blue Herons, Sandhill Cranes, and Killdeer are all reminders that winter has lost most of it's grip here in Southeast Michigan.

When the %$^#&@ Mockingbird comes back our house and starts blaring its song at 3 am in the tree right above our window

This little begger by waking me night after night has tempted me invest in a nice classic little double-barrel something....

Today I came outside to find bird droppings on my truck for the first time this year.....a sure sign of Spring. ;)

He is staking out his territory. Record his "song" this year and then next year start playing it back on loud speakers at 2:30 AM about 1 week before he usually starts his claim making. See if that will keep him away...

Of course, This means you will have to listen to YOUR recording a week longer and for a 1/2 hour earlier (and longer) than you would have to put up with his song, but you will get to say you drove it away!

Of course, songs change a bit over time and you may have to do a new recording every few years, but in that year you will get to sleep 1/2 hour longer than the years you are making your "claim" for the property against the bird.

For me at least, one of the true harbingers of spring is this weekend. Namely, the East Coast Large Scale Train Show. The weather may be cool and damp, but the show is always great fun.

Best Wishes,
