I'm thinking of modifying one of these old "toys" into an inexpensive self-powered camera car for recording my club's layouts.

I had a few of these locos growing up, and I like that they're inexpensive and have large wheels to lessen track irregularities.

However, I'll need a flat surface preferably close to the center axle.

Can somebody post a picture of what these look like beneath their boiler?

Thanks!

I went ahead and bought one to tear apart, and they do have a large flat area that extends above the drive wheels that would be good for mounting a camera.

However, even with the whistle and bell mechanisms disabled, the motor and gearing are too loud for my taste. I don't remember the things being that noisy nor so light and weak.

I'll try a Li'l Big Hauler loco instead: Their motor blocks look up to the task, and they have space to mount the decoder and wireless receiver on the foot plate. (Plus I forgot I had one laying around. :p)
