Good evening all.

I am a novice G scale fan and a long time lurker on this forum.

I have a Aristo Craft 0-4-0 starter set that had been in storage for a couple of years. (long story)
I have the Basic Train Engineer ART-5480.

I change the battery and set up the train to circle the Christmas tree and the strangest thing is happening.
The train comes up to speed but will gradually slow as if the slow button has been depressed.
it takes about 2 minutes for the train to come to a complete stop.

This happens in both forward and reverse.

I brought the train up to speed and disconnected the battery from the remote but it still is happening.

Any ideas?

Bill, did you lube the loco before you started running it? After two years the gearbox grease may be old, and wheel bearings may be dry and heating up. What power pack are you using to supply the train engineer?

Most likely the receiver is the issue as it can not remember the speed setting.
Can not be the transmitter as he removed the battery.
Engine has possibilities, but if it shows the slow down immediately in each direction, receiver is the culprit.


Best way to find out is to just hook up a 12 volt light bulb to the receiver. If it will not stay on, the receiver is bad.

I agree with Don. Try the lightbulb.

The way that loco is built, the dollup of grease Aristo put in there will last longer than you will.

If the loco has an issue, it would either stutter as it tries to move, refuse to move until you give it a nudge, or waddle as it goes down the track. All are pretty easy to remedy.

Well you guys were right. It's the receiver. For some reason it cannot remember the speed setting. I guess I will be chacking e-bay and see what I can find.

If you have a regulkar power pack rated at 1 amp just hook up to it. Later RJD

What is the power pack used to feed the receiver?

I use a discarded 19 volt laptop computer power pack for my basic TE.

The basic is rated at 2.5 amps and the laptop power pack is 3 amp.

Your laptop pack would do nicely if your basic was working.
