If you are referring to the...

< a target="_blank"

That attribute with the _blank setting causes the link when clicked to open the URL in a new browser window.

If the attribute is left without a value (as depicted below) then the URL will be opened in the same window in which it was clicked.

If you would like a really good reference to HTML v4.01 and/or XHTML v1.0 try the following www.w3schools.com/ when the home page displays look on the right side under the References heading.

They also have some very good tutorials on just about anything relating to the Internet. Look on the left side menu, have fun.
