I hesitate to post such a picky objection.

On the indoor RR forum, it is subtitled "for those who still (underline button doesn't work--but that's okay) like their trains indoors."

I find that subtitle ... grating, because I'm now disabled and can no longer go outside all that much. Let me hasten to add, I am not doing the 'ADA' act. It's MY problem, not YOURS.

I am a first class member, and will be so long as I am able to be, because this is a most excellent board and deserves to be supported. It is friendly, the Monitors are First Class--in short, I have ABSOLUTELY NO complaints with this board.

But guys, think about it: did you intend to rub a disablility in someone's face? Of course not. As I said above, it's my problem and I accept that.

I wish it could be changed, if such a request is found worthwhile.

I live in the middle of town with no garden but large outbuildings and have a large indoor system from choice.

It is heated to 70f/21c year round so I can go out there anytime of the year.

Example I have an open day in January so people have a railway fix when they cant get into there gardens.

I have this great back yard. It's huge. It's relatively private. It's a bit sloped, but nothing that couldn't be overcome.

I'd love to have 4,000 feet of track out there and tiered loops... and all kinds of other wonderful things.

On the other hand, I'm not a millionaire, and here it's over 90 degrees for about six months out of the year.... and can be cold for about three.

As such, my 200 feet of railroad in the air conditioned/heated/security system protected basement is STILL a lot of fun. The deer stay out, and the mice are small enough to be taken care of by the snowplow on #45 ... and rain or shine it makes for a good day railroading. Of course, elbow room is at something of a premium... but I still have five foot curves and #6 switches, so I'm not limited to tiny equipment either.

I might get an outdoor contingent someday ... but even then I'll STILL have railroad inside.

And, I'm "only" 40 ... with no major malfuctions except my size, so it's a pretty safe bet I chose this route.

Never had an outdoor railroad, though I tried twice. Now I don't even have an outdoors, or an indoors, so I go to the Botanic

I'm hamstrung for outdoor space so also I'm indoors in my garage, small layout but tiny as it is, even that is proving to be a handfull to plan and build, I'm still planning scenery,doing traditional model railroad scenery either plaster or foam, is a bit more daunting than just piling some dirt and tossing some seeds on it. Would like to build something small outside but given how small our actual useable yard is and the space available and what SWMBO desires to do with it, I doubt I'll ever have an outie, so its indoors for now, maybe ever.

No intentional slur was intended towards anyone Les, disabled or not. Even if the subtitle was changed to "For those who prefer their trains indoors" or "For those with indoor layouts", one could still interpret it the wrong way if they chose to.

If I had my druthers, my preference would be for an indoor layout, but not only do I not have the space, I also run live steam and would need good ventilation and something to keep the oily water off the floor. I don't think I'll have that layout in this lifetime. Since, like Vic, I'm also hamstrung for outdoor space, I currently have no permanent layout at all. /DesktopModules/NTForums/themes/mls/emoticons/sad.gif

I had an outdoor layout for two years when I first started in this silliness but when we built a new house with 1400 sf of clean basement how could I resist? Never noticed the "still" in there but I'm not going back outside. To hot. Too cold. Too wet. Too dry. To bright. To dark.

More power to those of us who build and maintain a real garden empire though. Some of the worlds best on display here. But not me.

Of course no intentional slur was meant by anyone. I hoped to have made that clear. I just wondered if, presented with a different perspective, it might be changed: the simplest would be to drop 'still' and leave the rest alone. But if nothing's changed, that's okay. I said what I wanted to say and won't say any more on the subject.

I have a perfect outdoor space of some 60 x 20 feet, unevenly sloping and overgrown. That's where I started actually digging a trial roadbed. I knew I'd need real water control and drainage, plus a number of other things peculiar to outdoors RRing, and it struck me as a sort of real challenge. But the St. Louis area is hot in the summer and can be seriously cold in the winter, and is cursed with 10/10ths cloud layer far more often than you'd imagine. I think, due to the confluence of the MO and Miss rivers in the vicinity.

Althogether, given a better appreciation of the upkeep problems inherent in an outdoor line, I'm very happy to settle for a 3' x 20' inside, airconditioned, heated room.
