I was pulling up Steamup.com to look for details on the freelance Consolidation I might take on. Upon loading the main page I was greeted by this message.

I was upset to hear about the transition to digital only, but accepted it if it meant the magazine would continue. Now I'm sad to see the loss of the steam only publication.

I think the shift to digital only was the death nail in the coffin. So many folks still want a print magazine. I think when they announced the shift to the digital only format, the subscriptions dropped even move. Sad to see it go. Guess Garden Rail from the UK is all that is left and a subscripton to that one is quite expensive with the exchange rate and mailing costs. Or you have GM1RA or 16mm Association you can join, both have excellent quarterly magazines that have a heavy focus on live steam
I have G1MRA. I purchased a magazine stapler so I could print my Steam in the Garden issues at work and make my print issues from the PDFs.
Sadly, I think many did not want an "E edition" and that was the final straw in the magazine. Its a shame that we now totally lack any type of magazine for large scale trains(non ride on scale) in the USA. GardenRail out of the UK is one of the last magazines standing that is just for larger scale non ride on size models both live steam and otherwise powered.
I got a subscription in October, but wasn't that impressed as they still wanted me to buy the individual issue. However I found out by what was left of my subscription being refunded.
So sorry to hear this. Most magazines are as good as the articles they receive from writers. Unfortunately, I never wrote an article, so I have nothing to complain about. I did/do like reading SitG and also Garden Railways. I have all the issues on my hard drive and go back from time to time to reread items.
Thank you to the SitG staff who labored on (I assume unpaid/underpaid?) after Ron Brown's death.

What makes you think Ron ever got paid?
SitG did actually offer a small stipend to authors - I got paid a modest amount a couple of times.
I am thankful the magazine carried on as long as it did after his passing. Hats off to Marie and the rest of the crew that kept it going for so many years after Ron passed on. My collection of STiG goes back to the early 1990s with a few gaps as my interest in live steam came and went for a few years in the early 2000's.
I'd thought that SiTG would close its doors after Ron's death, so I was quite happy to see it continue. I didn't particularly mind having an electronic subscription, as I could print off selected pages that interested me and didn't have to be bothered with storing a lot of paper.

I did write one piece for the magazine back in 2009, but I didn't get paid for it. Instead, Ron sent me a piezo-electric igniter late in that year as -- what would you call it -- a consideration, an emolument, an honorarium...I was happy to be part of it, having my name in print!

I also remember visiting Newark Valley when Ron and Marie had their annual steam up and peeking inside the office where Ron created all those issues of SiTG. Kinda neat, you can't just drop in to Kalmbach's offices in Waukesha and wander around.
Ahhh...I was wondering why there was no presence at the Cabin Fever show. I would have thought that subscribers would have received a message of some sort.

Will the online archive be available? For how long?

Their message says that they will make the entire archive of issues available to the public. That process is kind of started, the workshop projects are only available if you are not logged in to your account. Confused me for a while.
The duration of the free availability will depend on how long the web hosting funds last.

I'm working on downloading the entire archive onto my home storage. Who knows if I'll ever read every issue, I've got a 28 year backlog to catch up to. But if someone else refers to a back issue, I'll have it

I better start doing the same...
Hello Tdreabe,
my name is Eduard, I am from Vienna \ Austria \ Europe. I recently started a search about the 'Steam in the Garden' magazine and was very unhappy to find the thread where you are talking about the end of the magazine.
In the message you copied it is stated that the contents will be made available to all steam modelers and I tried the website, but I end up on a 'Log on' screen....
You said that you can download the contents, is there a special address which I do not know?
I have an Accucraft 'Dora' and Marc Horowitz started a series of articles about modifications on her, I think starting with No.129 of the magazine.
Can you help, please, I would really like to download the old magazines too!
Thanks for your answer and your help!

Eduard,

I am not sure how the new owners will share their copyrighted information. Or if they will. As of now, all prior access to the site and past issues is gone.

Send me a private message and we can discuss if I have the article you're looking for archived.
