In the Jan/Feb 2008 Steam in the Garden, Charles McCullough (Semper Vaporo) has an article about how he made sight glasses easier to read.  I decided to give it a try and it works really well.  Rather than slit the top and bottom of the brass backer piece as Charles did, I put a slit in the bottom only and drilled holes in the top to tie it in place with light brass wire.  I printed the pattern on solid white Micro-Mark decal paper and, after the decal had dried, I covered it with glossy clear Scalecoat to secure and protect the decal.



Finally, I filled the boiler and tried the test pattern out.  It works perfectly!  There's no question as to the water level as you can see in the picture below.  Thanks for publishing the idea, Charles.

I wrote the article and used old glass automotive fuse holders to clip it onto the site glass. I found that if you did it that way you could turn the indicator around the site glass so you could see it from what ever side you were running your engine.
