After years of lurking and stalking, I decided to finally join in. While not _entirely_ new to the hobbie (i've had G since age 3; Playmobil), I'm certianly new to setting up tabletop/outdoor/etc layouts, along with the basics of detailing etc. The newbie question I wanted to start with, and despite my best efforts and searching and not finding the answer, I have an aristocraft FB-1 that I wanted to paint to match my burlington northern FA-1. First off, the plasitc grill covers near the roof, how would I go about painting those to look smoke black and does anyone know what color codes aristocraft uses to paint their locomotives in the factory?

Many Thanks, and I hope I'll be able to learn something along the path.

WDF,
The easiest way to deal with the grills on the FA1 is to order the new metal mesh grills directly from Aristo.

As to paint codes, I have no idea.  I sometimes take a computer printed picture with me to the store and compare with rattle can lids to find the closest match.

Pleased to meet you, Wolf!

We don't know anything about the paint codes, but if you take a part to a paint shop, even Wal Mart, they can use their computer color matcher and make you a quart of anything. Krylon spray paint is very popular with garden railroaders, and guys have figured out what's close to about anything.

Maybe Torby doesn't know anything about codes, (ha ha, speak for yourself Tom! :D) but "we" realize there are standard color codes in the world.

Panatone codes are of course the most common and universal. I've not seen any locomotive manufacturers specify this publicly.

I will say this, that if anyone would have these codes, Aristo would. Go over to their forum and ask, the person who designs and specifies the paint participates on the forum.

Regards, Greg
