I've photos of tool boxes mounted on the cab roofs of Heislers.  I have never seen a photo of Shay with a box mounted to the cab roof.  Has any one mounted one of these on a shay or thought about it?  Could it be that there boxes ended up on the fenders of the shay and putting one or two on the roof is not really needed.

Chris,
It is pretty much as you suspect. Most tool boxes were mounted on the front platforms or on the running boards next to the boiler. On a local tourist line that runs old logging Shays they simply store most of the tools on top of the tender.

Hi Chris
I understand that it's a box holding a Firehose
D&RGW fitted them to the roof tops of their shunting Locos
To be a toolbox it would be pretty unsafe to climb up there to just get a spanner
