Resurrecting a Mamod meths loco.

528 Views 4 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  steev
I inherited a Mamod loco from my Father In Law (now deceased) and I'm about to give it to his Great grandson. But, before I do I need to reacquaint myself with operating a meths burner. My question is what wick material works best for the burner and where to get it? The pic below is for a "Roundhouse" publication from the 1980-1990 era. and the burner I have is similar.

Steve,
Thee are probably lots of options, depending on the supplier.
I bought a 'mile' of asbestos wick material many years ago and use only that.
There are modern wick materials available, but I never found one that worked very well, but they do work.
You can try LiveSteamStation (Accucraft):
Or TheTrainDepartment:
There are probably others.
Not too sure what kind of burner set up you have, but whatever you use, try not to fill the pots too tight, or the alcohol will not burn very well.

The way I test how many wicks to use as a starting point, is when it looks full, flip the burner over and tap it on your finger or hand and see if you can get the wicks to pop out. If they do add another wick until it just barely won't pop out. Then on to see how well it burns.

Hi Steve,
So how are you getting along with the wicks?
I was doing a sort out of draws yesterday, and came across a pack of wicks from I.P.Engineering in the UK, which led me to this article about their improved bits for the Mamod.
I wonder if this is the burner that you have?
Would you like the pack of wicks?

Yes, If you know the wick pack you have will work I would like it.
