My 10 year old son (Caelan) decided to hack his pinewood derby kit into a Jet powered rail car (his idea, not mine). Power was provided by a GWS ducted fan ($15) connected to a speed controller (another $15) and a lithium ion battery (don't ask). The entire car was conceived, built, detailed, and painted by my son - including using a sheer and brake to cut and bend the bolsters from brass. (and yes, he still has all 10 finders and both eyes!). The only parts not done by him were soldering the electrical connections, and two brass parts that were soft soldered into position. The video was shot by my wife at Richard and Melinda's wonderful garden railway this Saturday:

Way too cool!

Teach him to solder. I was soldering at age 10 and have all my fingers and toes, though not my mind, so maybe I'm not a good example.
