I think that detailing a locomotive correctly would be a lot easier if I knew what all the various mechanisms and pipes are, and where the pipes begin and end. Is there a good online source for this kind of information? What about other sources?

Model Railroader Cyclopedia - Vol. 1, STEAM LOCOMOTIVES Kalmbach Publications.

Besides hundreds of photos & plans of steam locomotives the front section describes all the workings of the steam locomotive with diagrams.

Volume 2 does the same for diesels.

I don't know if Model Railroader offers any of this info online but if you are a subscriber you might check. Either way the Cyclopedia is a must have for detailing locomotives correctly.

Hey Richard,

I'm going to say that I've referenced so many old books that are available via Google, that I don't remember just which one you're speaking of (actually it's most likely a serious 'senior moment'
). Anyway if you could jog my memory with a bit more information maybe I can come up with the link again.
