·I have been writing up my research of Shay locomotives from the Lima Locomotive Works paper and drawings archived at the California RR Museum and the Allen County Historical Society at Lima OH for a while now. This has been appearing in Steam in the Garden. SitG Info: http://www.steamup.info/
Starting in issue #100 I am drawing and modeling one of the small 10 ton Shays with 2-6"x10" cylinders. There was a double fold out to show both sides and the front and back in 7/8ths scale in issue #100. Issue # 101 had a fold out with the frame plan, and issue # 102 had a few more frame details. I just submitted the drawings and text for issue # 103 the drawings are the grate shaker assembly drawing and the ash pan part and assembly drawing.
The drawings are all Lima Locomotive Works drawings scaled to 7/8ths but the dimensions are full scale, this was done so ANY scale could use the information as it is the same print that was used in the pattern and machine shops about 100 years ago.
The 2 Shays that will get the main attention are the 2 Mapleton Shays but there were a lot of Shays built to this basic Shay plan. The plan number was assigned to the first Shay built to the plan so almost every Shay with a 2-6x10 engine with a shop number between 1553 and 2800 was built to this plan. In other words almost every gauge a Shay was used for including the minimum gauge of 19 11/16". The supplimental drawing used for gauge changes for 2' 3' and Standard gauge will be included in the series. The plans could be easily reduced for 20.3 scale.
I have been posting my shop progress at: http://www.7-8ths.info/index.php?board=108.0 The 7/8ths boiler is nearly spot on the same size as the coal fired boiler in Brian Wilson's book "Steam Trains in Your Garden" there is a boiler thread that will be useful for anyone building one of those boilers.
I will have my progress so far at Diamondhead.
Cheers
