I have been writing up my research of Shay locomotives from the Lima Locomotive Works paper and drawings archived at the California RR Museum and the Allen County Historical Society at Lima OH for a while now. This has been appearing in Steam in the Garden. SitG Info: http://www.steamup.info/
Starting in issue #100 I am drawing and modeling one of the small 10 ton Shays with 2-6"x10" cylinders. There was a double fold out to show both sides and the front and back in 7/8ths scale in issue #100. Issue # 101 had a fold out with the frame plan, and issue # 102 had a few more frame details. I just submitted the drawings and text for issue # 103 the drawings are the grate shaker assembly drawing and the ash pan part and assembly drawing.

The drawings are all Lima Locomotive Works drawings scaled to 7/8ths but the dimensions are full scale, this was done so ANY scale could use the information as it is the same print that was used in the pattern and machine shops about 100 years ago.

The 2 Shays that will get the main attention are the 2 Mapleton Shays but there were a lot of Shays built to this basic Shay plan. The plan number was assigned to the first Shay built to the plan so almost every Shay with a 2-6x10 engine with a shop number between 1553 and 2800 was built to this plan. In other words almost every gauge a Shay was used for including the minimum gauge of 19 11/16". The supplimental drawing used for gauge changes for 2' 3' and Standard gauge will be included in the series. The plans could be easily reduced for 20.3 scale.

I have been posting my shop progress at: http://www.7-8ths.info/index.php?board=108.0 The 7/8ths boiler is nearly spot on the same size as the coal fired boiler in Brian Wilson's book "Steam Trains in Your Garden" there is a boiler thread that will be useful for anyone building one of those boilers.

I will have my progress so far at Diamondhead.

Cheers

Hmmmm. Looks like I'm missing a whole lot by not having any SiTG reference material.

But then I've never seen the magazine either. Is it 'real' - that is to say, made of paper, or is it all on-line and downloads that you pay for?

And if it IS 'real' where can I get it from?

RE: Mapleton Tramway Shay 7/8" scale

tac, yes it is a real magazine. If you are into steam then you should subscribe to Steam in the Garden. Dan, even though I will probably never build a shy I find your articles fascenating and thank you for the great effort and time you have put into them. I do love the tiny shays!

I forgot to mention the shop numbers of the Mapleton Shays. The first one is S/N 2091 and was named "Dulong" the second locomotive was S/N 2800 and was named "Mapleton". The reason that this small 2' tram that ran in Queensland Australia was chosen to model was most Shays had a boring set of one type of car to pull, not so with the Mapleton Tramway. It had its share of log, cane and flat cars but it also had a Passenger & Gaurds van, a Passenger & cream van, and a pig and calf wagon.

The book "The Mapleton Tramway" by John Knowles has line drawings of the cars and a composite drawing of both Shays after they were combined to make a single unit. It is a good book with a bunch of photos and maps and is an interisting read. I think that it is still in print a google search should find it.

Hi Bruce,
Both Sci-fi fans from here will be at DH. I just do not get into many Sci-fi conversations with trains and coal smoke all around me.

RE: Mapleton Tramway Shay 7/8" scale

I wish we had a REAL Stargate 1 then I could come to DH on Wed, Thur etc and be home each night to sleep in my own bed...sigh. But then if we had a transporter ie Star Trek type that would also work. Can you beam laterally and horizonitally as well as vertically?
