The funny thing is that you get used to the noise!
Back in my collage daze… I lived at the bottom of the Questa grade in San Luis Obispo near cal-poly. I could count on a train at about 2:00 am, with the helper engines returning in about an hour after getting trains over the hill. As an added bonus, I was located just before a grade crossing so I had the benefit of the air horn as well.

Wish they would get the North Western Pacific Running in my town again so I could hear that sound again.

On a side note, there is a trucker who drives the 101 rout thru town who does have a diesel air horn on his truck. I only hear it a few times a year, but it makes me think of ghost trains.
