I have a friend who has an Aster Climax, and it seems that the only way it will light is to take the smokebox door off. Unlike other gas engines I have come across, the flame from the lighter doesn't seem to want to jump back to the burner, even when everything is hot, if you hold it to the stack like on other gassers. Anybody out there with actual experience of an Aster Climax who can tell me if this is normal for the beast?

Yep this is normal and you will burn your fingers getting the number plate back on to hold the door shut...I hinged my door using the existings hinges and just driling and using a 00-90 bolt to secure. I think the poping back not happening is the smokebox for the most part is completely sealed except for the stack opening.

Hope this helps.
