My K-28 has a safety valve similar to a Ruby where it continuously lets pressure out and it is non adjustable. Can someone tell me where I can obtain a pop style valve? Is this stock on the K-28?

Thanks

Yeah sounds like a 'standard' Accucraft safety valve that leaks from the sealing o'ring as they get hard when old and don't compress on the spring. If you have the one where you can see the valve spindle from underneath (under a cover you screw off? i can't remember I'm getting too old) you can take one apart and replace the o'ring and adjust the spring to hold 50-60 psi.
Watch out for the E clip that holds it all on the valve spindle as they fly away so take apart and put together inside a see-through plastic bag. That way any flying E clips or parts can be found easily. Post an image of the safety valve.
You could of course order another one or get a wee-bee 'pop' style valve and you may need the thread adaptor to go with it. There is someone who has these that posted recently on this website that sells them on https://www.etsy.com/shop/MidwestRail

Hi Kevin,
Removing the steam dome on a K-27 and some Accucraft can be difficult as they can be very tight on the thread from the factory.
First remove the whistle cord and unscrew the whistle then try to unscrew the dome from the flanged base.
I have had a few loco's where the dome wouldn't budge at all under hand pressure so I resorted to use long handle crescent multigrips with a thin rubber or leather protector strap wrapped around the dome to protect it and that did the trick. Hold the dome base on the boiler, if you can, so it won't try to turn and distort the thin outer boiler shell if everything is real tight and you can detect movement with your fingers too.
Afterwards lightly grease the thread and never tighten it right down.
Wee Bee valves can't be re-set but 60 psi is great as it means a more powerful and controllable loco and if fire is set right, blows off less frequently that one set at say 40 psi.

Oops I just realized you want info on K-28 see below

Hey Kevin, disregard my last text post that was for the K-27 loco not the K-28 !!!!!!!
For the K-28 the dome top is removable so take whistle off and on the front of the dome just after the curved top there is a very small hex bolt. Undo and remove that and the the curved top assembly should come off .
It been a while since I removed the dome on my K-28 so I hope it's right.

Ah .... OK I think the small round part where all the imitation safety valves and pipe with valve wheel are mounted on can be screwed out then the you will have access or at least lift off the dome. First remove the imitation safety valves and pipe then see if you can turn the round part holding the dome down. Also remove the whistle just in case that holds something as well.
You might have to put two threaded screws into the holes where the safety valves or pipe were and use a bar as a lever but be careful and don't use the brittle brass imitation safety valves or pipe to get leverage on as they will break off. (Don't ask me how I know!) The paint also acts as a bit of a glue but it should come out, if not I'm stumped.

Hi Kevin, looks like the dome stays on then? Maybe you can use some type of tube spanner to get the safety valve out ? Needle nose pliers perhaps" you have me stumped with this one. Glad the top cover plate came off so you can see what's going on
