For those interested, the March '09 issue of Model Airplane News has an eight-page article entitled, "It's All About Servos" (the cover says "Servo Essentials - Everything You Need to Know"). It's an informative article that describes how servos are constructed, how they work, the difference between analog and digital servos and the advantages and disadvantages of each, etc. It also goes into how to hook servos up to controls for maximum effectiveness (while geared towards connecting them to model aircraft control surfaces, the basic principles behind the method is also applicable to trains). Worth reading imho.

There is a great program called Servomances that contains a huge data base of ACTUAL TESTED servo parameters - not the mfgs claims. The program lets you search and explore the data base and select servos for your application. The only downside is the program is in French. Not to worry, here is a thread on an RC forum that gives translations of the trems you need to know and a brief tutorial on using the progam, as well as a link to download:
