Your nearest museum is at Covent Garden (which is a pleasant place to visit anyway.) The London Transport Museum is tucked away in a corner and has a few railway exhibits, plus buses, trams, etc.

A fun trip is the train to Princes Risborough (Marylebone Station, Chiltern Line, about 1 hour,) where you will find Garden Railway Specialists at the bottom of the station access road.

You are surrounded by restored railways about 1-2 hours away. The Bluebell line is in Sussex

The Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch is a unique 'miniature railway'

And the NRM is in York, a mere 2 hours up the ECML at 125mph. Pick up a copy of 'Steam Railways" magazine for details of the full-size steam action.

Try Bekonscot Model Village and Railway in Beaconsfield. It's a large garden railway open to the public, equally as impressive as the Fairplex at Pomona.

The Princes Risborough shop is great I always call in when work takes me in that direction. If you are going there go a little further to the Didcot Railway Centre, Great Western steam in all its glory, Broad Gauge as well all 7ft1/2 inch of it!! take the Great Western main line from Paddington the centre is alongside Didcot station. Something smaller? Leighton Buzzard NG railway @ 1ft 11 1/2''.South of London? then try the Bluebell railway plenty of Southern steam here,it connects with the main line.
