How do I create a SIG line?

Sorry for this very basic question, but I can't figure out how to create a Sig line. I see all kinds of graphic 'avatars', and I've seen a link in my 'manage your account/profile' pages to add a picture. But all I want to do is add my "-Gary the Garden Rail Hobo-" signature to my messages, like the old days.
I've seen some folks using text Sig lines, sometimes very extensive ones! So I know it CAN be done.
But HOW?

Go to the line of links in the upper right of each page...

Forums &nbsp My Profile &nbsp Search

and click "My Profile"

On the resulting page, click "Edit Profile near bottom left. You'll see a box there for your signature. You can also upload an avatar from here.
