Hopefully, 2009 will be a better year than 2008 turned out to be. It started out looking iffy and it lived down to our worst expectations! I don't do resolutions but I will make an effort to patronize my LHS and do my part to keep our hobby moving forward!

First footing is a tradition mainly from Scotland, (like "herself"!). You have to go out of the house before midnight and bring back into the house a coin, a lump of coal, a piece of bread, some salt (and most importantly for "herself") a dram of Whiskey from a new (unopened) bottle!!! These will usher in the New Year and bring wealth, warmth and a welcome -to all who visit the house. The person who does this must be a tall dark male, if a female does it or the person is fair haired then it is for naught and the reverse happens for the next year. The Whiskey was given to me over Christmas by "Cousin Ralph" in Napier were we had our Christmas holiday. The Napier area produces fine wines, rums and a decent "brandy" and ermmm (well the whiskey in the area comes from Japan).....

Standing on the front door step five minutes before midnight in sub zero temperatures and then having to wait for Big Ben to chime wasn't the hard part.

Drinking the whiskey was....
