As an extension of the idea, here is a picture I posted about a year ago.

The Craftsman Digital level shown will also give % of grade readouts as well. The car in the picture is on a 1.3% grade. Usually, my level us also carried on a flatcar.

The level also has a lazer beam and a tripod screw. It can be used directly on the track.




Here is another leveling tool I use on the layout, from Harbor Freight.

The vertical material and the roadbed are two colors of the same vinyl decking material. Here it is used on the ground.


Here used on the floor of our deck.


Another similiar product is called everlast. HD handles brickmoulding and trim products called NeverRot that is similiar.

I get the material from Resource of Wichita. It is recycled vinyl.

I agree with Marty about the concrete roadbed being much cheaper than the plastic/vinyl ladder. If you notice in the picture with the reciprocating saw, there is concrete roadbed at the bottom of the picture.
