Since my 10 wheeler is out of commision I decided to start painting my LGB engine from the value starter set. I painted the green cab black and also painted the tender I built black (was brown) I took off the red cow catcher and going to put a wood bumper on the front. I still need to add more detail to the engine and in the process of painting the gold bell. I still want to weather the engine. I did not have to paint the front but wondering if I should so it matches the black cab ( the front has a little more shine to it?????? What is the best way to get the black weathered???? Here is what I have done so far.

Not sure if I am leaving the inside of the cab green or paint that black as well

Bragdon chalks are the easiest/best way to weather. sss.bragdonent.com FAST shippers also. If you have a real hobby shop close, they may carry them. I got mine online and were here in just two days! Jerry

I personally would paint the boiler to match the cab. Painting it will also make it easier to get chalk to hold to it, that’s if you decide to weather it that way.

Couldn't agree more, Shoe. The little Toy Train 0-4-0's are wonderful platforms for bashes...

Great job!!!!

The Hartland Value cars are just perfect for the locomotive to make a very nice looking train.

To start, you might just dull the entire locomotive with some Krylon Arcylic Matte. Can #1311. Test it first to make sure it's compatible with the paint you used.

For weathering, I use water thinned acrylic Patio Paint flat black, gray, tan and other colors in an airbrush. The paint is available in the craft section at Wal-Mart. As Jerry mentioned, chalk works great as well....

Not to steal your thread but here's a 'bash I did from the 0-4-0 motor block for some other ideas to stir up some creative juices....
