Thanks to Pete Thornton, I learned how to post pictures. This is the condensed version of the last 2 weeks.

I finally started my MLS "Build a Classic American 4-2-4T Locomotive" Mini Masterclass by David Fletcher offered back in April 2005.

The key part to this build is the CPH Kit from Hartland Locomotive Works which was assembled specifically for this class by Phil Jensen.

I plan on building the Danforth Cooke Gothic cab version with laser cut parts from Rick Raively



The class included 3 background chapters and 3 construction chapters which thanks to Dwight are still available for download

This is what I started with



The frame dry fitted with the motor



Frame bolted together and firebox rivet detail added



Cab and tender deck built and attached





New pilot built with styrene



Adding rivet detail with track nails



and that is where I am at in this build

Nice start. I am happy to see activity on this forum again. It has been a long dry spell. Thanks for posting and I will be loking forward to more progress. I saw the prototype last month at the California State RR Museum. I have a photo if you would like I can post it.

Please post your pictures of the CP Huntington

As for activity, I'm still a little bit hesitant about posting pictures since the unfortunate deleting incident. But I'm willing to give it another try.

Hi Tommy;

The locomotive is looking good. Now that you have some experience with a single-drivered locomotive, perhaps you could create some actual Birdwater & Raspberry RR locomotives (remember those cartoons in the REAL Garden Railways magazine?). Just a thought, but perhaps it could pique your interest. My vote is for the 0-2-0 cab forward.

David, Thanks for the vote of confidence, but I still have along way to go before this one is finished.

Well the other night didn't go so well. I have a slight problem with my hands, sometimes they don't work. As I was dry fitting the pilot to the chassis, my hands decided on their own, to let go. I got to watch my pilot hit the floor and break apart. So I gathered the pieces up and walked away. (No, I wasn't crying....there was something in my eye)



So the next day, after a very stern talking to my hands, I reassembled the pilot.

Then tonight I dry fitted the pilot and added some more rivets.



If some of the rivets look off kilter, it's on purpose. The rivet patterns are based on the actual bolt locations on the real CP Huntington.

Picture posting isn't working for me again, but attachments do

After a 4 day “What the Heck” holiday, the crew was back at work in the Rio Gracie **** Shops.

The chassis rivets were finished, and the chassis was disassembled and prepped for paint.


Using a circle cutter, masks were cut out for the wheels.


Parts were airbrushed with Stynylrez Black Primer. This produced a flat finish.
The smoke box was masked off.

Createx Wicked Red was sprayed on the wheels.
A basecoat using Createx Autoborne Black Sealer was sprayed giving it a Semi-Gloss finish.

In the next few days, I will test some colors and hopefully spray the chassis color.

So pictures are working for me again.

Here is where I am at.

The chassis has been painted, bench tested and run on the outdoor track.

Cab is built. Boiler is very rough. Basic dry fit of boiler, cab and tender.

Working on adding sound now.
