I just received a "Gramps" tanker through eBay. Its handrail(s) is/are broken in several places, and the Bachmann site does not show an available replacement.

As a newbie to G, I wonder if there might be "after market" metal handrail posts available from someone. I could then use wire and make a more durable application.

Just get hobby brass wire, that is what LGB used...No rust!! Hopefully someone is making the pieces that hold the rail.

Roundhouse Eng in the UK sells their brass handrail stanchions very inexpensively - $10 for 6? They call them 'Handrail knobs". Might be overkill for you?

I was wondering if you could use cotterpins for the stanchions/standoffs. Just a thought.

Cotter pins sounds great for me, can be bent for an offset and then painted to cover the gap. A dab of glue or epoxy on top to make them a flagpole also.
