Hi Fred - Does your U1 have radio control on the regulator? - if not, how do you cope with the sudden increase in power as the compounding kicks in without a simpling valve.

On mine I have a conventional Aster 4 wick burner mounted centrally in the firebox which limits heat transfere to the wet walls of the standard locomotive type fire box.

Unfortunately this arangement dampens the power jump at the expence of full throttle power.

I have no radio control on any of my live steam locomotives. I do have a simple oval track with a path next to the track, so I walk with the train until it runs smoothly (and then start filming 😉 ).

but the locomotive is called 230 UI in the title of the videos and the coaches are all J&M (Golden Age never made CIWL coaches).
