I read the other post. It didn't help me. Since I'm new to the Mogul, I just started ruining my first Mogul, I figured I'd post here.
It runs really ruff. Sometimes it will not start moving. The lights are on, but it is stuck, but not humming. Often I can push the loco or rotate the front or rear driver a little to get it started.
I got the bottom plate off, removed the drivers, electrical clips, brushes and sliders. Using my thumb on either of the idle gears, I could easily rotate the motor through 340 degrees, for about 20 degrees it became hard to move and there was a scraping sound coming from the motor. To me it sounded like the armature rubbing on the magnet, or perhaps a bad motor brush.
-------------------
So far this is the only test I have done to isolate the problem:
I put the axles back in, but left off the side-rods and cylinder quids. This way I could run it on rollers with just the front and rear axles rotating and eliminate any binds or quartering issues. There is a definite CLUNK CLUNK CLUNK coming from the innards of the loco. Sometimes when I stop, the loco will not start, so the original problems is still in there. I cleaned away the grease and very closely examined ALL the teeth on both the idle gears and the axle. There is no cupping or even any sign of wear. The loco only has about an hour of run time.
-------------------
What do I do next?
( I have a spare set of gears, and the local dealer stocks two different motors, both with two worms spaced about the same distance but the motors themselves are different lengths I have no idea which replacement motor will fit the Mogul.)
HELP!!!
