Accucraft Garratt

I recently unboxed a long sleeping Accucraft Garratt NGG16 from batch 3. As I read the user manual, it references a “boiler filler system”. I didn’t find a vertical pump, etc in my box. Can anyone provide me with some details on what I’m missing. pic anyone?

Also, the wheel tool to turn the reverser was no where to be found. That thing reminds me of the sometimes used screw Aster reverser without the wheel in an even more inconvenient location. Fortunately, a long handled 5mm hex driver can deal with that on the occasions it might be needed.

I’m sure the experienced owner can highlight some of the other things to be done.

Much appreciated,
Sam

Max-I’ve had to apply that rule from time-to-time…I remember an event in CA where a friend ran his Daylight with british southern coaches. There were two Brits in the crowd who were utterly appalled at Rule 8! I had to smile but perhaps Rule 8 was applied a bit too liberally there..,

Tony—thanks for clarifying-it appears it is a batch 3 and I have more work to do. I probably missed the smokebox arrangement—I think my eyesight is deteriorating—i’ll get in there and remove the exhaust tube.

The steam transfer pipe-is there a recommended size there?

Thanks to all the UK fellow steamers-someday it would be fun to come over and meet some of the great steamers there. I am jealous of all the vendors, events and clubs you all have.

Best,
Sam

I use 3/16ths, so increasing the diameter from 3mm to 4.75mm.

Sam, I suspect there will be a few of them in Alna, Maine, on August 12-13th, for the 16mm annual meet. Your Garrett fits the bill.

Tony,
Thank you—time to pick some up. If only getting proper cars from the UK was so easy and affordable. Rule 8 will be implemented!

Pete,
Interesting, didn’t know that such event existed here.

Tac,
Much appreciated!

The best of all is the Association of 16mm Narrow Gauge Modellers. The join-up fee includes a huge pack of useful information, including a 'how-to' that sells for about $20 or so if bought separately. I urge you to join in. On the web-site, once you are a full member, you'll find digital access to the entire collection of magazines - issued as paper four times a year, along with a separate bulletin of activities. Your US connection is www.northamerican16mmmodellers.org/2023.html. On 15 April we'll be holding our huge annual show on the East of England Showground, Peterborough, with eighty stands and many layouts... There is also an association Facebook presence - HUGE and inspiring, regardless of your interest - many of us are in or on both.

I didn't want to open the packets they have arrived in for fear of losing something, but these are some rather nice NGG16 number and works plates I have just received from MDC Plates (MDC name, number and works plates)

Wow—It was hard enough to find one! South African Railways in Utah…Jim has an amazing venue for running engines and he does have a lot of interesting engines.

Sam
Why does the fourth (red) one have steam coming out of the coal bunker?
Tony,
Good catch. Perhaps the owner instead of routing the exhaust line to the front decided to expel there…a bit odd looking…

Fair to say that these locos have (correctable) exhaust back-pressure issues but that does seem a weird solution.

I thought the rear engine exhausted up at the back of the cab - like the 4th one on that amazing quintuple-header.

No, there is a long under-sized exhaust pipe from the rear engine to the smokebox.
