This is in regards to the locomotive under construction in this thread.

I am trying to figure out exactly how a locomotive would have been painted around the time of the Civil War. I understand the basics, but the devil is in the details, as they say.

The frame will be blue. The firebox will be black. So far, so good, but what about the pieces of the sliding joint between the two? They're riveted to the firebox, so black makes sense, but they span the frame, so blue would look right too. Hmm...

The parts I'm talking about are seen here:


I played around with GIMP, and came up with some rough examples of what I'm thinking. Which one would be most accurate for the period?

Everything the color of the frame:


Only the outer portion the color of the frame:


Everything the color of the firebox:
