" the music died". -- Tired of riding the bus, and in order
to get his laundry done, Buddy Holly, along with a couple of other
featured performers of the Winter Dance Party Tour of the Midwest (the
Big Bopper and Ritchie Valens), chartered a private plane after their
Clear Lake, Iowa, show to take them to Moorhead, Minnesota. Piloted by
Roger Peterson, the small Beechcraft Bonanza took off from the Mason
City, Iowa, airport at about 2:00 a.m. on February 3, 1959, and crashed
a few minutes later, killing all on board.

I thought the plane took off from Clear lake as the crash site is just out side of the city. The plane did not travel far when it took off so I do not believe it left from Masion City. I remember this crash quite well as I was in high school in Gilbert Iowa when it occurred . Later RJD
