Years (decades?) ago I followed here a thread by Kevin Strong documenting revisions to his Americanized Lady Anne 2-6-0. It had lovely photographs and easy to follow instructions, and if I recall correctly it collected a series of "updates" in preparation for a convention (Diamondhead?). A boiler jacket, a tender rebuild, things like that. And Vance Bass had made a similar conversion to a 2-8-0 that was a real treat to see and read about here.

And some time after that those threads evaporated. Now The Train Department offers a bar frame specially adapted to Americanizing the Lady Anne, so it seems that the tedious rotary tool machining that Kevin and Vance described in their conversions isn't needed.

I wonder whether anyone has photographs of Kevin's or Vance's conversions. Please could they be shared here? Google hasn't been helpful. I've searched here and there without luck. Thanks!
 
Would have to check with Vance but I think that the 2-8-0 was part of a special batch of SRRL 24 parts from RH that Paul Kenny worked up with them. There was something like 6 sets that I was told, maybe more. It included a SRRL 24 tender too. Much of it can be redone today too as parts but RH will not do that or any other major SRRL 24 parts today except for a RTR tender.

Ive been thinking of offering a few more American frame kits including a 2-4-0 just have not had much time for these small projects. Plus the interest in scratch building has really fallen in recent years.
 
Would you ever consider custom making a 2-8-0 frame, or would you need a certain number of buyers first?
There is a 'project' being described in Steam-in-the-Garden magazine to scratch-build a 2-8-0 using various off-the-shelf parts. It includes a complete frame cut by Denver Waterjet:

I lost all the photos I had taken of the thing, but I was able to recover a couple from the GR article I wrote, so here's the "beauty shot" from that article (Feb. 1999). If I were to start it today, I'd get one of Les' CNC cut frames. It was a right pain to do it with a drill press, Dremel cutoff disk and file.

The original loco was more or less 1:24 scale. Here it is after a 2013 rebuild to 1:20.3, with larger laser-cut wheels, a Trackside Details shotgun stack, Baldwin tender trucks from Fall River Productions and a laser-cut cab I originally designed for the Accucraft C-16..

That project never came to completion, unfortunately. I did mine the hard way (just like Kevin did), by taking the RH frame and drilling and cutting it to fit.
Well I know of at least 1 full set of parts that were recently built up, and they were with a set of RH cylinders remachined by Tom at Sulpher Springs . Wonder where the rest went. Supposedly they were part of the kit you were working on.. Def a bunch of RH parts you cant get
 
By the way, I really like the look of that boiler jacket. It adds some heft to the locomotive.
Thanks! If I was going to Americanize the Roundhouse, the boiler had to be bigger diameter than the smokebox -- that's just how it's done. Here's the "secret": British 2" copper pipe has an OUTSIDE diameter of 2 inches. US 2" pipe has an INSIDE diameter of 2 inches. I went to a plumbing supply, told them what I was up to, and they cut me some rings approx. 3/4" long from a bit of 2" iron pipe. I slipped them over the boiler, then opened up the RH boiler jacket so it would slip over the spacers. I wrapped wool felt for insulation between the spacers. The RH boiler bands hold the jacket in place, and no one can see the small gap at the bottom.
