She crawls on her belly like a reptile!!! #21 had her maiden run today! I'm happy to say she runs really well!! Rod's suggestion of washers under the pilot truck did the trick, and the pilot still tracks nicely - even over uneven track that derailed the pilot of an Aster Berk! Didn't phase her and she chugged merrily around Bob's track!

Some movie clips of her maiden run (click on the preview image to view the movie)...

Dwight,
Congratulations! She looks like she runs very well, and from the last clip has GREAT stack talk.
Thanks for the posting! What a fantastic project.
Best regards,
Alan |

Dwight,
It is always great to see an NPC locomotive, but the 21 is sooooo nice, and a smooth runner too.

After watching the process of her construction, it's great to see her in operation! Congratulations! You must feel like a proud papa! I'll bet you turn a few heads out at the track this weekend! Chris |

| She looks (and sounds) great, Dwight! Only one problem - you built her backwards. What's up with that? :-) |

Thanks guys. Yes, I do indeed feel like a proud papa.
I can't take any real credit for how well she runs... that's all Dave Hottmann's doing before I ever got her. He had her tuned and running like a Swiss watch before he shipped. All I had to do was make sure I didn't disturb any of the running mechanism when I stripped and rebuilt her.
Be that as it may, and especially with the heavier loading on the pilot truck, it was great that there were no tracking issues, and it's a real load off that she runs well after all the effort I have into her so far.
Now I just need to finish the tender and cosmetics, and get her painted and lettered. The major part of the construction is behind me. |

Awesome Dwight, Perhaps the added weight on the pilot truck is HELPING it track better. From my experience, stock Accucraft pilot trucks seem to have a tendency to bounce around and they eventualy find their way off the rails (at least the two-wheel ones).
Looks great. looking forward to more of your pictures.

Dwight: Great show. Figured we would see you in the video running around the track like a little kid.
What was that on the flat car?? A fuel tank??
Can't wait to see more installments

Thanks again gents. She had four... or was it five... more runs today with nary a mishap (other than the loco/tender fuel hose splitting). She seems to put smiles on people's faces... even the show guests who have probably no idea that such a loco really existed. hehehe
No additional photos today. I've been on my feet since 8AM and I'm bushed.
Bob - the flat car is actually the beginning of the tender. I still have much to do there. The tank is indeed the butane tank. It will be hidden once I get a little further.
Eric - you may be right. Hadn't thought of that. |

Dwight, can you elaborate a bit more on your issue with the neoprene hose splitting. I have a tender locomotive project going as well an I would like to know what caused the failure.
