This was inspired by my wife's aunt and is now a group effort by the three of us. The first car in the collection is the blue flat car hauling 3 circus wagons, a stake driver wagon, a folding seat wagon, and a water wagon. Behind it is a Bachmann tent car and an Aristocraft circus caboose. The train will be 1:24 scale standard guage running on narrow gauge trucks. The circus wagons and cars are wooden Circus Craft 1/2" kits, or scaled up from HO or 1/4" kits. The owner of Circus Craft, Frank Cumbine, passed away several months ago so the kits will no longer be produced.

After of 6 months of cutting and gluing sticks the circus train made it's first run this morning. At 30 feet long it's hard to get a good picture. The train consists of 1 elephant car, 1 horse car,1 stock car, 6 flat cars with 17 circus wagons, and one passenger car.

Haven't weighed the cars. The train is made of mostly 1X6 poplar wood cut on a $110 table saw, with some pre-cut bass wood for the wagons that are kits and not scratch built. For this run I got out the K-27, blew the whistle and everything. The K had no problems pulling it, but my super Ruby said "NO WAY!". All the cars are on Accucraft freight trucks without bearings except the passenger car has Accucraft passenger trucks with roller bearing wheels.

When the Circus comes to small towns in Missouri & Arkansas they use Elephants to move the wagons. The Elephant is also required to "PULL UP" the tent after the carnies spread it out. Dave has an Elephant, I can see his trunk sticking out of one of the train cars.

Larry,

When the Kelly Miller Circus came here we went and watched the tent be raised by an elephant. The man leading the tour said they bought a tractor for the job and after two days the elpahnts got upset and quit performing because they had been replaced by a machine. They soon sold the tractor and the elephants went back to raising the tent, and performing. Our elephant is too lazy to raise a tent, but then again she doesn't eat and make a mess.

Mike,

Sounds like fun to me!

There is a Lady in DeSoto just across the RR tracks from where the Circus is held. As soon as she see's the Circus pull out she rushes over with her pickup and scoops up alla the FREE Elephant "POOP" for her flower beds. She has some very nice flowers, taller than most in town.
