Actually GP-9, not a -9 like most think of. Heck of a price though. If only I had a real RR!

| Not a bad price for a Blue Card certified locomotive. Heck, you almost can't buy a new SUV for that price. |

Yep, that be the Big toys You'll need a REAL backyard as in a back "40" to start a layout Hmmm, is that enough area to build a "starter" loop |

Sorry to say guys but that's expensive!!!! UP (yes the anti-Christ themselves) sold off a bunch of engines a few years ago. They were sold as is, where is, sitting IDLING in the Roseville,CA yards for $2000 each! A local entrepreneur bought a bunch of them (I think about 50) and had them hauled by rail to the local shortlines' yard and then hired the shortline employees on weekends to go thru each engine and check them/fix them. He sold quite a few to a couple leasing companies and leased the rest out himself! The engines were SD-9's with one GP-9 in the bunch. Steve |

I'd have believed $20K, but $2000?!? That's insane. |

Steve,
I'm given to understand that this particular loco is not in need of any "fixin' up", it's ready to go. How much did that entrepeneur pay to bring that $2K special up to Blue Card worthiness?
Knowing that RR's make or break themselves on how long a loco can make money for them, and guessing that in 1958 this loco probably went for something on the order of 200 large, I'd say it's held its value pretty well. Try buying a new one today - only if your name starts in Bill and ends in Gates.
Now if you've got a complete depot-level overhaul shop, and a helluva lot of time on your hands, then be my guest, go for that lower-priced spread. It's a dirty job, but somebody's gotta do it!
