To answer you question- no. Coal fired locos typically have an ash pan beneath the grate. This helps to defect any downward radiant heat, if there is any. Just cut the wire between goes between the slide switch and the battery terminal to splice in the third battery. The single "C" battery holder is from Radio Shack and comes with positive and negative leads. Solder in the new wires such that the batteries are negative of one to positive of the next....

We saw this in Toronto a few weeks ago. In my view, it ranks among the best footage of steam locomotive in action I have ever seen, and shot in some of the most spectacular mountain scenery in the world. It also was a very good documentary on the building of the C.P.R. Makes you wonder how many IMAX......
