Feedback and Upcoming Maintenance - 06/22/2009 5:42 PM
Congratulations to the last few winners of the myLargescale.com photo contest.   WC585 for his photo of a wrecker cleaning up after a derailment, and 78ths for his shot of a small narrow gauge loco pulling a load of produce into market.  These photos are a great example of the diversity of modeling you can find here atmyLargescale.com.  They are both great photos and both are very deserving.  Make sure you stop by the contest and vote for your favorites, and enter your own shots too!

Over the past few months, I've had an outside company conducting random surveys of visitors to myLargescale.com.  There were a couple different reasons for running the survey.  First, even though I knew the demographic of a myLargescale.com user, it's always helpful to have independent verification and get more exact numbers.  I was also able to ask a few questions specific to our site.  Second, the survey gave me a way to get anonymous feedback on the site.  While I realize that many of you are perfectly comfortable telling me "how things are" directly to my face or over email, others are not.  I wanted to give those folks a chance to share their thoughts.  While many of the comments were either very positive (I love the site, etc) or not very helpful at all, there were some very good constructive comments made.  I'd like to take a minute to address a few of them.

  1. Fix the "printer friendly" function - This is coming soon.  See the maintenance notice below.

  2. Make picture posting easier - Picture posting is actually quite simple.  There have been several tutorials put up by different members.  I am working on organizing those into a FAQ that will exist within the forum and not outside of it.  I will also make sure that the FAQs are accurate. I know that some info in the current FAQ is out of date.

  3. Make picture posting free - There is a misconception that you must be a paying 1st class member to post photos.  This is not true.  The FAQs mentioned above will cover posting for both 1st class members and those who are not.  I spent a good amount of time and a chunk of cash to make posting pictures very easy and integrated within the site.  This functionality is unique tomyLargescale.com and I felt should be an added value to those that choose to support the site financially.  To reiterate, anyone can post pictures to the site, we just make it easier if you're a 1st class member.  You can upgrade your membership to 1st Class here.

  4. More updates/articles - myLargescale.com is a member driven site.  We rely on the contributions of our members.  Most members choose to post their projects in the forum rather than write up a formal article.  We are looking into doing another MasterClass, but nothing has been set in stone as of yet. If you would like to contribute an article, please contact me.

  5. More things for clubs to post links, and club stuff - This is coming soon.  See the maintenance notice below.
In two weeks, most likely on July 3rd, I will be taking myLargescale.com down for an upgrade.  The upgrade will take several hours.  I will be doing this in the middle of the day so that I can get support from my software vendors should the need arise.  I know that is inconvenient to many of your routines, but it has to be done that way.  I expect the upgrade will take several hours to accomplish.  I've done the upgrade on my test server several times already, and will probably do it once more next week to work out any remaining kinks.

When the site comes back up, you will notice things in the forums will be the same for the most part.  There will however be some changes.  The changes won't be anywhere near as drastic as last time.  The same text editor will be in place, the same structure, etc.  It will be more refined.  There will also be a glut of new features.  I don't expect you to know how to use them all, but I suspect some of you will.  I've been preparing some tutorials on how to do some of the things.  An area for clubs is one of the new enhancements.

One of the major changes will be the private messaging system.  We're moving to a solution that is more tightly integrated with the forums and other applications that I'm implementing.  If you have any private messages in the system that you want to keep, I suggest you copy them off into an email to yourself or something like that.  They will no longer be available once the new system is in place.

I look forward to the upgrade.  I've been working on it for several months now.  There are a lot of cool features and great possibilities that are coming down the pipe.  Thanks to everyone that supports the site by upgrading to 1st Class.
