I'm off to California ...
Today I fly to Sacramento for a client engagement tomorrow. Tomorrow evening I head to San Francisco where I'm going to hang out till a speech next Monday.
I have all kinds of research data on the NPC - books, pamphlets, articles. Lots of words. Lots of photos. But I've never been there. Never even seen a Redwood.
At least 1 1/2 days this weekend will be devoted to exploring the 80 mile route of the NPC. I'm particularly interested in:
1. The general terrain. That's important to me in designing the garden the trains will roll through.
2. The cities, towns, camps, etc. I'm hoping to find some old structures along the former NPC right of way. If I do, I'll take photos and take ofd dimensions.
3. Any artifacts of the NPC and MT&MW. Road beds, footings, abandoned yard areas ... anything.
4. And I need to figure out how to prune a Dwarf Alberta Spruice into a tree that has at least a passing similarity to a redwood.
One day I'll start in Sausalito and spend the day tracing the main line and the branch to San Rafael. My daughter will be with me. She wants to see redwoods. So we'll spend the second day on the Mill Valley branch and hopefully walk the old MT&MW grade to the top of Mt. Tam. Then we'll visit the Muir woods.
It's my railroad mecca. Wish me luck.
