Ready to make an R/C and Sound purchase.
Looking to add Airwire control, and sound to a pair of Aristo Craft
Rio Grande GP40's.

Intend on running track power.

However, I'm still needing to know WHAT I'm gonna need, for conversion.

Right now, I know I'm gonna need the following:

1 CVP T9000 throttle

2 QSI G-Wire recievers

2 QSI 1008-363 sound decoders, with Nathan M3 horns.

Also need to know what size/type speaker will I need for the GP40's?
And what kind of speaker connection(s)?

Last thing, where can I get all items necessary to convert to R/C and Sound??
Local, or online.

As always, any information is much appreciated!!
Thanks.

Keith,
call Jim at Gscale junction in Ohio has great prices also RDL as to the speaker, the one that comes in the gp 40 works really well with the QSI but put black tape over the open ducts on the inside of the loco it make it sound much better:wow:

It is possible [but more difficult] to set up one airwire card to operate both Locos. I did it with a set of SD45s.

I have it all in my GP 40 and love it. Run both battery and track power. Speaker came in my GP40. All the wires and cables I needed came with the QSI decoders and the GWire. If you are going to add the remote switch to turn the GWire off with you need an SPST switch and some small gauge wire. The only other thing you nees is a couple of pieces of double stick tape.

Nick,

Found online and sent an E-Mail.
Have not heard anything back.

Gary,

Also sent an E-Mail.
Says Airwire set up exclusively for battery power.
Possible to power from track but external modifications are required.
Says Airwire folks frown on this type of thing!
However, I felt as if he was trying to push battery power on me, which I DON'T want.

Jim,

Never thought of that. Controlling 2 locomotives from one decoder.
But, I'd like to operate my locomotive separately if I choose to!
Different locomotive set maybe.

rpc,

Appreciate the info.
Would like to know more on how you did your installation(s)!
Still need speaker info though, as my GP40's do NOT have speakers installed.
Or if they do, I never saw them. And I had one unit apart, so I could remove the electrical plugs, as they interfered with couplers, causing lead car derailments.

Could ask local too.
Caboose Hobbies: G scale guy never there when I go down.
Mizell Trains: Doesn't deal with QSI. Only Phoenix. Not too crazy about
adding a sound system that is gonna cost me more than what I paid for the locomotive!

Right now, since I'm still confused, I think my best choice is to give up.
I'd still like to add sound/remote operation. But, if I can't, I'm gonna give up looking and/or trying.

Keith, trying to run both from a single decoder to save money does not make sense in my mind.... the only AirWire decoder that will run 2 locos is the one from AirWire, so now you need a sound board, like a Phoenix, for over $200.

So buy 2 QSI plug and play, buy 2 GWire receivers, plug them in, use the MU connector wires to hook the batteries to and you are done.

Otherwise you have to hardware the AirWire into the GP's, and then connect sound boards to each, and it's a mess.

Regards, Greg

Greg,

As mentioned already, I've pulled out the plugs from one of the GP40's.
Gotta do the same to the other. Plug wires interfere with couple swing and
caused derailments of lead car.

Do not plan on converting to battery!!
Still, the more I ask, the more I'm intent on giving up going R/C and sound.
Becoming way too much of a PITA, and not worth my time/effort.

I thought the QSI/Airwire combo worked with track power--i've been thinking about trying it out for a while now. Does it not work with track power?

I've been using track power and aristo's 75 mhz onboard train engineer in four locos, and it works very well although the range is not huge.

I've been thinking about QSI because of the simplicity of sound/power in one card. But I'm not interested in battery power.

Kieth,
if you must go with Aristo, you can still buy just the QSI sound board for it and it works great with out R/C too... alot of these guys are into DCC and battery power, tends to make thing more complcated at 1st. start with just the board on dc power you will love it, for a 127.00 you cant go wrong then if you like it move to the g wire and other stuff... my way of thinking is keep it simple DUMMY:Dthats whats on my train room wall works for me:w00t::whistling::O:D

Nick,

Currently, what I'm looking at fits the current budget!

For now, I'm looking at dropping One sound unit. Going R/C in both locomotives, but
with sound in one locomotive only, for now. Will save me the extra $130 or so, for a later time, when it'll fit the budget!

Waiting to hear something back from Tony, of Tonys Train Xchange, for pricing info
on the parts I'm after. What'll help more, is when I get my truck paid off. 3 mo to go!

Anyway, Appreciate the info to date.

Keith depending what RC system is your going to use you can take the one sound board and wire so both locos have sound with only the cost of one sound board. Later RJD
