Vic - I made "L" shaped pins from small brass wire. It was also not uncommon for logging lines to make their own similar pins. They work just fine. :)

You people are all confused.... THIS is a Lincoln Pin: (Found it on e-bay, but since I use knuckle couplers I don't think I'll bid on it.)

Ken,

Another option might be to go "hybrid". A few years ago I modified an LGB porter. Since I didn't know what it might be pulling, I decided to make the coupling flexible.

I mounted an Ozark L&P pocket and modified a Kadee #835 knuckle to fit into it. Now I can use either type of coupling depending on the service the porter performs.

The pin either holds the loop or the knuckle.

Here’s other prototypical styles of L&P

The hook, for example

pin for chain or bar (made from a nail; entire car + wheels handcast)

pocket style based on Japan prototype (hand carved, accepts “rivet” pin)

Just kind of wondering, if you could "simulate" Link and Pin couplers with magnets, kind of like the Thomas the Tank Engine wooden sets, that couple with them.
