Bull,
As I recall the USA's SD-70 trucks actually have the equivalent
of a 43" wheel now...
Bruce,
The answer to Ur ? is yes, I have done that conversion several
times, in fact all the the 6 axle USA units I own now have Aristo
motor blocks under them... The last one I did I wrote up with pics
and posted here on MLS, a couple of years ago, it was 2 or maybe 3
parts perhaps, should be in the old archives I guess... While it
used to be a worthwhile conversion, time and prices have moved on,
I used to be able to do one for about $75 worth of parts... At today's
prices, U probably couldn't do that job for much less than $200-$225 !!!
An at that level the cost/benefit ratio has gotten way out of hand...
It just flat "ain't worth it" anymore...

Let me start by saying I am still having problems posting pictures and mostly is reducing there size. I am going to try and if they are two big I apologize now and hopefully will figure it out.

I called USA and talked to Mike about the idler gears and he said they had them in stock. So I ordered some and my friend RJ was with me and had me ask if they had any for the SD 40, which Mike said not only yes but that they were the same as the ones in the SD 70. Anyway for those that have both it is nice to know that little bit of trivia. I installed four new idlers to replace the ones that were stripped out. I am going to identify which axles had problems. The SD 70 has 6 axles and I start at the very front of the engine and call that #1 and go back to #6. Axles #1 and #6 are the floating axles. Axles #2 and #3 are in the front truck and #4 and #5 are in the rear truck. These four axles had the stripped idlers. The cause was improper assembly when changing over to all metal wheels and getting rid of the rubber traction wheels. The bearings on the idlers for #2,3,4,and 5 were installed with the diamonds up instead of flat. This caused incomplete gear tooth engagement between the idler and the metal worm gear on the motor. So when we ran it pulling 10 cars after about 30-45 min run time it started making noises and when I disassembled it I found the stripped gears. I installed the new gears and ran it last Sunday. It seemed to run fine but I plan on removing the covers and checking the gears before going any farther. It was an awesome run at our club last Sunday. We had two derailments. The one involved all three loops and we had a three train pile up pictures to follow. The other had a derailment on loop two and as I was taking pictures of the mess the SD 70 came around, we are on DC at the club and I don't have any sound yet and it was really quiet, and plowed its way through bouncing off two of the derailed cars and in the process wiped the right hand rail off the SD 70 but did it derail? No, it just kept on going like the big dog that it was. Very impressive. I wish I could have caught it on video but, oh well. I will have more after I check the gears but my other club is setting up their portable disply at the Golden Spike show this weekend and I am playing with that.
The big wreck

Our 25 ft steel bridge

It is strong as Richard is a big guy but it needed to be refinished
