the keys “1", ”2", ..., “8" (also marked with the ZIMO traditional letters ”L", “Z”,etc.), which controls the functions F0 - F7 of the decoder. The actual state is shown by LEDs above the keys (yellow is “on”).

If the loco address is in the 12 - function mode (change into this mode by “E - procedure”

with “litlle L key” - see page 6 -, also functions F8 and F9 - F12 can be control led: holding the the “little L” key like a Shift key assignes key “9” to F8 and keys “1” - “4” to F9 - F12.

The L key is used for the shift. You can download the manual from zimo.at and see the info on page 4.

The "little" L-key  is actually the Key that IS only marked L where also the F, W, T.... keys are.  Should there be any problem we need to check the MX1 Microcode version and the MX2 handheld verision.  Honestly I don't remember when the higher function key functionality was added or whether it was always in the specs.  The last additiuon to MX2 was made 2002.

As a followup for others that are stumbling across this page and are curious to hear the resolution. All ZIMO's manuals apply to the latest firmware only. I had to update the EPROM in both the MX1 and MX2 to the latest revision before the shift key operation would work. http://www.miniloco.com/ had the 6.12 EPROMs in stock.

That's why I still have an NCE system... the shift key that says "shift" does shift... and you can also use the option key. It's easy to get all 28 functions.

Oh, and to select a loco, you hit select... and the consist keys do consists.

Why o why can't Zimo use English and English abbreviations? How expensive would it be to just mold keys with different letters, and silk screen a different shell.

Zimo is not cheap, there's got to be some profit margin in there for an English version.

Greg:
The MX2 is a histroic museums piece that was created long before higher function keys were aqdded to the NMRA standard and long before NCE came out with DCC products.  ZIMO opted not to abondon their existing customer purchases and gave them a backdoor to continue to use their handhelds without requiring to buy new ones.

ZIMO's more current handhelds including MX31 and MX32 have a single shiift key that doesn't even have to say SHIFT but has the pictogram of of an up arrow

I was more focused on getting English labels and abbreviations.

How much could it cost? It's just a plastic shell and buttons.
