| Yesterday I took the 210 mile drive from the Cape to Great Barrington, MA to visit my son and help him get a Mass ID. After driving up to Pittsfield and getting all the errands finished, we decided on an early dinner before returning him to school.
As we were on a bridge crossing the mainline, we saw a train coming. We hung a U-y, and went to the parking lot of the train station. There in front of us was the locomotive of the WB Lake Shore Limited, daily train #49 about to pull out. We sat for a few, and then she sounded the horn, and the bell was clanging. Slowly she pulled out as we watch the cars go by. Then, at the end of the train is an Observation car. I know, why is this such a shock? Watching the silver cars roll by one by one, when suddenly crossing my field of vision is this brightly colored brownish green/orange car. Yup, the good old Great Northern, bringing up the rear with the City of Spokane observation car.
I'm not sure if this was some type of railfan rental, or what. Should anyone be up for some research, perhaps they'd like to find out what the City of Spokane was doing bringing up the rear of Amtrak's Train 49 on July 29, 2008.
I will say this though, it was a very very cool sight. Even the neon drumhead on the end was lit up.
