I have given this new web site software a couple of weeks before I start belly aching about anything. Sorry Shad .... but I see NO improvements. Only things that no longer work properly. Replying to a post is now apparently a 10 minute process, made ever more difficult because I can no longer review the previous posts while editing. I can live with some of this change if we can just get the speed back. And like others, I really don't like the way active topics is formatted. It just takes me longer to figure out what I want to read. Active Topics is my entry to this site. It has to be easy to use.

I must agree with Del on the issue of not being able to see the posts while you're writing a reply.

When typing a reply, at the bottom of the window, just below the SUBMIT button is a box that says TOPIC REVIEW and to the right is an arrow. click on it!

My train of thought was derailed -- there were no survivors.

Also since any changes to the 'Active Topics' screen are going to take a while since Shad has to rely on the developer to make them.

You might want to try using...
  • The 'All Forum Category' screen (i.e. accessed via MLS menu bar, Community menu, Forums)
    • Any forum that has new content that you've not looked at will be indicated by a folder with a blue balloon call out displayed to the left of the forum name. One advantage of this screen is that it's organized by forum, so you can only bother with the particular forums you're interested in.

Also when on the individual forum screen listing the topics, they will be as you expect them to be, re; a totally new topic will have the topic subject/title displayed in a bold typeface, a previously read topic with new content will be in a bold typeface and the 'Jump to first new post' button will be also be displayed at the end of the topic subject/title text and clicking either the subject/title text or the button will open the topic and orient the page at the first new reply. When you close the topic by clicking the browser's 'Back' button you'll find that the bold typeface will have been cleared on each topic that you look at.

When you're finished with the individual forum, then once again use the browser's 'Back' button to return to the 'All Forum Category' screen. You'll notice that the folder for the forum you just returned from will have been changed to just a plain folder image (i.e. no blue balloon call out). Take note that if you do nothing more than access an individual forum that indicates new content, and then immediately return to the 'All Forum Category' screen without ever opening any topics, the blue balloon call out will be removed.

  • Another option is to use the 'Not Read' screen, accessed by the link of the same name located in the 'Forum' tool bar which you'll find directly above the dark-blue 'News' forum category header, or in the same location on any topic page.
    • If using this option, it might be a good idea to use the 'Mark All Read' button found in the bottom-left of the 'Not Read' screen. You may wind up missing a few topics at first but you'll clear out what may be many pages of topics that you've never read.

    • When you open a topic from this screen the display will be the same as described above for the individual forum screen. However, when you return to the 'Not Read' screen the topic that you just read will no longer be displayed.
Hope the above will be found to be of some use.

I use the quick reply to generate most of the text of my reply... then submit and "pretty up" the reply with the wysiwyg editor, and add pictures at that time.

It's always a good thing to re-read your post in my opinion.

So that method lets me see the previous posts and make sure I address the issues and address them properly.

I use the "not read" more than active topics. There may be a thread with virtually no activity, but some poor newbie with no answer to his question. I keep up to date several times a day.

So, the site works for me, but I can appreciate that people that used to rely on the Active Topics have been put into a tailspin... try the not read as Steve suggests.

You might want to cross-check the 'Not Read' with the 'Unanswered' screen, because there could be a topic that you've read but has still gone unanswered.

Not a chance! Ha ha ha ha! (I hope you get the joke... no I'm not trying to increase my post count!)

Seriously I will check it, but I "take care" of them several times a day...

Yes sir, I saw it coming right after the submit screen cleared and I was returned to my posted reply.

The only reason why I mentioned it was the 'Unread' screen results-set is based on whether you've ever opened that topic. The 'Unanswered' screen results-set is based on any topic that only has the originating reply present.

Actually, I believe the unread screen results is ANY post that I have not read... even on a thread I have previously visited and even replied on.

So brand new threads show up as well as replies to threads I have already visited...

Yes sir, you are correct about the 'Not Read', but I'll bet that you'll show about 27 pages of 'Unanswered' topics right now (depending on how many items per page you're configured for, the 27 is based on 30 items per page). And the condition I was addressing was where you had read a brand new topic, didn't have anything to reply, and no one else has replied, nor has the originator posted an additional reply. Thus that topic will not be displayed on 'your' Not Read screen, but will show up on the 'Unanswered' screen.

One thing that I see is that the Active Topics summary screen no longer has the ads of the companiy that sponsors that forum. Since they do show up when I view the main forum screen, I know that they are still paying for that spot. Doesn't matter to me, because I don't sponser any forums, but if I did, I would have to think carefully about how my ad dollars were beign spent.

Got it Steve, I did go there as promised... and it did underscore that the not read is working best for me... I saw the list of unanswered topics, and I had seen them all before, and I remembered why I did not comment on them.

Was a little surprised there were so many unanswered..

Well, I don't know what my problem is, but it still takes between 2 1/2 and 3 minutes for MLS to process my reply to a post after I hit submit. I have a high speed cable modem connection. All other sites take seconds.

Ok, so that post was instant. The one I waited for had a quote in it. Does that make a difference? I got tired of waiting for the edit button (seems I read you have to wait X minutes for that function to work now), so I am posting this. We'll see how long this one takes.

Posted in 2 secs, this editor came up instantly this time, but I have to wait 60 secs to resubmit. I give. Go figure.

The previous 'update' lost quite a few members and I'm afraid this one will do the same. I'm hanging in there
did not find it really awful, but it does not seem any easier. You need to realize that you are dealing with folks
that can hardly use a computer and will give up easily. Once you get this system 'fixed' I would suggest no changes
for YEARS.

I almost always had a problem with the old system and sow response after I hit the submit button. This new system works better for me than the old one did. As for the other complaints about active topics listings, all that I can sa is AMEN sir.

So is it just me, or have things slowed down again? I am having to wait typically several minutes to reply to a post.

try your ping times to other sites the instant you experience a slowdown. I post all through the day, it's better since Shad fixed it last time, back to it's old (new) self.

you can also test your download speed.. .I think we had the specifics of the tests, etc. on another thread.
