...or to explain it a bit better....

I have noticed now a few times that a newly uploaded picture to me 1st class web space does not show up when U then click on the "insert picture" icon on the forum to insert that picture.

The picture is on the 1st class webspace itself since I can copy the link and paste the picture link into the forum, but it's definitely not yet accessible directly via the picture link in the forum.

So the question is, how long before it is?
And maybe an brief explanation why it isn't accessible as soon as the picture has been uploaded?

The last picture where this happened to me is this one which I tried to post into the "Bachmann Track" thread:

As far as I know there isn't any delay, at least I've never encountered any, however, there have been times when the listing in the left pane of the Insert Image dialog placed the file in a sort order that I wasn't expecting, then it dawned on me this was because of sorting by file type.

Yes Steve,

I caught on about a year ago that the sort order is different, confused me as well for a long time why the files were not in the same order.

But tyhis is something different.
I just checked again and the D&RG Track picture still doesn't show up in the "Insert Picture" window.

Here is a screen shot I just took a few minutes ago - My mls webspace on the left and the equivalent  forum window on the right.

The "D&RG Track 1955" jpg file should show up right after the "BR 204 Vorbild" jpg file in the right window, but it's still missing almost two hours after I uploaded the picture.

Try using the Image Gallery button directly to the left of Insert Image. Image Gallery is specifically tailored to images in your 1st Class space, while Insert Image is more generic. Image Gallery is therefore much easier if the photo is already uploaded to your 1st Class space.

OK, I see the difference, but are you saying that the "D&RG Track 1955" file doesn't show up at all. Since you've got your MLS web space blocked from public view, and of course I can't access your web space via the Insert Image or Image Gallery there's no way I can cross check anything.

Or it could have to do with the ampersand character in the file name, just as a FYI the ampersand character is what is called an escape character in some instances. Remember, like it or not you still have to deal with the legacy of old file naming conventions, and should only use alpha characters, numeral characters, and the dash/hyphen and underscore characters in file names.

Thanks Dwight,

But image gallery is even worse when I want to insert a picture from my webspace to a post.

For one thing, the sort options are by date and size only, neither one of which is of any use to me.
Normally when I want to insert a picture it's one that is already on my webspace and I look for it by name in a list which I can scan through quickly - if the list were alphabetically like on the mls web space it would even be faster (ie not having it sorted by image application).
In the gallery I have 17 pages to look through in the default setting - I tried sorting the gallery by descending date expecting to possibly find the D&RG Track picture at the beginning but it wasn't there yet.

That gallery view btw doesn't work properly either - I have a 19 KB gif picture that shows in the gallery only as a "?" but when I click on it to select it, it shows up properly in the post.

I'll post a screen shot of that later.

Steve,

The image shows up eventually in the "insert picture" window - it's just not there right away.
Happened to me before and I thought that maybe files are only transferred somewhere between file servers every once in a while - that's why I asked about the delay - but now ytou're telling me there is no delay.

As to the ampersand character, no idea why that makes a difference since the picture shows up fine in the post.
They way I inserted it into the post is by copying the link location in my mls web space and then pasting that URL into the URL field just underneath the "picture insert" window.

So the file name with the ampersand works fine in the mls web space itself, it also works when the picture link with that file name is pasted into the URS field that is part of the "insert image" window, but it may not show up in the selection part of the window - I take it that's what you're saying might be an issue.

All I can tell you is, I've run into problems with all kinds of software (i.e. not just the MLS forum) regarding file naming conventions when not following the legacy rules established long ago. When I encounter that type of problem, one of the first things I do is revert to the old MS/DOS rule of eight-dot-three, all lowercase alpha, and no numerals as a first character unless preceded by an underscore character. While doing that doesn't always resolve the problem the vast majority of the time it does.

The same way that in Unix commands and file names case does make a difference, as it does in Apache servers path navigation if not configured correctly.

I'm not sure what you're talking about Knut.  Here's a screen capture of my Image Gallery as it initially appears...

I'm in the root directory of my 1st Class space.  Sun-directories are listed in alphabetical order down the left side while photos/images in the root directory are alphabetically listed as nine thumbnails per page.  I have 18 pages of images and a total of 161 images in the root directory.  I can browse them alphabetically or click on a sub-directory, which will similarly display images in that folder.

Is yours different than this?

The app caches the file list, so if you access the gallery and then upload through a separate interface, it may take some time for the the list to get updated. The default sort should be alphabetically.. I'll look into this coming week and see what I can do. I will most likely be doing an upgrade to at least the editor over the holiday break.
