I always go to Active Topics when I log in.

The past two days Active Topics has been empty.  I know someone must have posted in that time frame, so why am I not seeing them?

Must be something on your end.

For me there are a ton of active topics that show - 16 alone for today's date.

When you open the page initially, what date and time is showing in the box in the upper right corner?  If you change that value to show a longer period does the list then populate?

I wonder if somehow you are getting a 'double log-in' such that the initial date in that box is updateing on the 2nd log-in to the date and time of the 1st one, and if they are happening in rapid succession there will be no postings between them to get listed.

I always go to Active Topics and then immediately click on "Not Read" (2nd from the left in the top light-blue banner).  Once I have read all those in the list that I feel like reading, I click "Mark All Read" (at the bottom of the list) and when I want to see any new postings, I either refresh the page with the browser's refresh button or click "Not Read" again and repeat the process of reading those I am interested in and marking the rest as "Read".

Wow, I never knew that!

I have opened the active topics so many times to find it empty, this is great.

Thank you Semper

I don't have a date and time box in the upper right corner.

I only see a box that says:   Sort By:

There is also a WEB and SITE with SITE marked.

Below that there are:

Forums, My Profile, My settings, Search, Members.

No date or time.  I do not think I have changed anything in the last couple of days so I do not understand why I am no longer getting anything under Active Topics.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks,

John

It should be below the line you quote and directly above the DARK blue banner that is the header for the list of topics... on the right side the words are:

Replies Views Last Post

Are you sure you are on the "Active Topics" page? (What is the bold type header on the left just above that DARK blue banner?)

Have you tried the "Not Read" link, just to see if some other view method works?

Ummm... can't think of anything else right now... but we will keep at this until one of croaks or we figure out what the problem is.

I am ready to give up.

I still do not have Active Topics, however,  I can change the date in the box in the upper right corner to reflect 2 days and suddenly 2 days worth of active topics appears.

What is so frustrating is that in the past I never had to do that.  The active topics appeared as soon as i clicked on it.

I have not made any changes to my computer that I am aware of.

So it is just another of these flukey computer gremlins that continues to pop up all the time.

Who said computers would make our lives simpler?

AH HA!

Brain storm!!! (or... well... a light sprinkle maybe.... Okay, okay... my mind is just cloudy with a chance of light fog)...

Questions:

Do you log-in every time you come to this site or do you keep the log-in active so you don't have to?

Does that text box on the Active Topics page start with a date/time in it? Is that box blank or does it have the date/time when you opened the page?

I bet your cookies have been disabled or damaged such that your computer cannot store the date/time of your last access to MLS, so the next log-in to Active Topics can know how far back in time to search for new postings for you.

If you would like help getting the cookies fixed I can help.  Some people would tell you to just up and delete them all, but I advise against it unless you know what you are doing... it won't break your computer, but it may make smoke come out of your ears when you find that you no longer are "permanently logged-in" to some web sites or if you had an order pending at some vendor and the list has just dissappeared.  There are programs that will help you sort through the cookies and keep the ones that are important to you and delete the rest and delete the one particular one that is damaged which may fix your present problem.

Or we may find that your cookies are disabled now and new ones cannot be created.

What browser are you using?  IE?

Just for grins...

Assumming you are using a Windows product.

Run "Control Panel" --  Start-> Control Panel

In Control Panel find and run the "Internet Options" applet.

In the "Internet Options" window, click on the "Privacy" tab.

Then click on the "Advanced" button.

This will open a 2nd window titled "Advanced Privacy Settings"

I recommend that the top checkbox "Override automatic cookie handling" be 'checked'

Then under that select "Accept" under "First-party Cookies" and "Block" under "Third-party Cookies"

Then "Always allow session cookies" should be 'checked'.

Then click "OK" to close that window and "OK" to close the "Internet Options" window.

See if that helps!

Uh, you should probably exit the MLS site and wait an hour or so to let MLS members create some new postings before you come back to check.

It comes up with todays date and time now.

I use IE8 I think, anyway, I have never upgraded or changed since I got this computer over a year ago.

I like cookies.  My wife makes great snickerdoodles and chocolate chip cookies.

My all time favorite I guess would be oatmeal cookies but she does not make those very often.

A sheet of cookies is lucky to last an entire day here, so we don't make them too often.

I weigh about 193 and am 6'1" and am pretty active but I am sure I could put on a lot of weight quickly if she made ccookies every day.

Now something even crazier is happening.

I changed the box to last 2 days.  Then clicked on active topics.  Sure enough, a bunch of posts appeared.

However, I know it cannot be every post because part way down the page i am getting posts from July.  The last post on them was in July.

Now figure that one out!

You didn't say what you might have done to fix the initial problem.  Was it the cookie settings?

I got an update a couple of weeks ago that I associate with those settings getting changed on my PC, but I found it almost immediately as it was rejecting all cookies and nearly every web site I visit wants to scribble on my harddrive... and at least once per day and sometimes even more often I run "CCleaner" to wash all those crumbs off, just for spite!

I am a bit of a chocolate chip cookie connoseur myself.  My daughter and the ex-wife make the very best (I sure miss my ex-wife... but my aim is getting better).  I tried to follow their recipe, but the ones I made were terrible.  I think it has to do with female cooties getting in the dough or something.

As for your present problem with Actrive Topics... Hmmmm... give it a day to see if letting things simmer a bit will help.  I still think you may have a corrupted cookie someplace that needs run down the garbage disposal (like the cookies I made!).

You say you never upgraded the computer... but does that mean you have shut off the automatic updates?  Also, I have found that I have made what I thought were very minor changes to setups that have snuck up from behind and bitten me (cookies that bite back?).  It is possible that you made a change that you didn't think of as a "change" to your computer.
